A Special Day at Scroggie

Cameron Nellies

Falkland host the Lords Taverners for the first time in a match full of smiles, spirit and standout youth performances.

Falkland welcomed Lord's Taverners to Scroggie Park for the very first time on Wednesday, hosting a fixture that was about far more than the scoreline. The visiting side included several young people involved in the Wicketz programme in Edinburgh, a free community initiative designed to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds a safe space to play cricket, build confidence and develop life skills. That purpose and spirit were evident throughout the afternoon as both teams played the game with warmth, respect and plenty of smiles.

Batting first, Falkland posted 145 for 6 from their 30 overs, with a number of players making valuable contributions. Emma Halliwell set the tone at the top with a well‑made 21, while Kyle Lottering produced the standout innings of the day for the hosts, retiring on an elegant 35 from 36 balls. There were important supporting roles too, with Skye and Ruaridh Green showing great composure to guide the innings to a competitive total, helped along by a generous helping of extras that pushed the score upwards.

In reply, the Taverners showed their quality and composure, chasing down the target for the loss of just one wicket in 23.1 overs. A Butt retired on a run‑a‑ball 50 and N Johnson followed with a steady 30, giving the visitors a strong platform. Falkland did break through when Emma Halliwell bowled Tanai, but the Taverners continued to rotate the strike calmly, with another couple of Taverners adding a lively 31 and an unbeaten 19.

Despite the result, Falkland’s bowlers stuck to their task, with tidy spells from Skye Green and Owen Cutler and plenty of encouraging signs from the younger players who embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. In truth, the day was defined less by the margin of victory and more by the atmosphere around the ground. Players mixed freely, the cricket was played in excellent spirits, and the values of the Wicketz programme were on full display.

It was a memorable afternoon for everyone involved, and the Taverners will always be welcome back at Scroggie after a fixture that showcased the very best of community cricket.
