No Fairytale Finish

Cameron Nellies

On Richie’s last outing, Falkland battle hard but are outclassed by a dominant visiting side.

This report is written in the words and spirit of Richie Barclay, who captained the Threes for the final time on Saturday before moving south. It wasn’t the fairytale ending - no Ben Stokes‑style rescue act, no heroic spell, and still no elusive Threes win - but it was a day full of meaning, memories, and moments that summed up exactly what Richie has brought to the side.

Falkland won the toss and chose to bowl, hoping to build on last week’s superb fielding performance. That didn’t materialise, and Richie was clear that some honest self‑reflection is needed across the squad when it comes to consistency and applying pressure as a team. Arran’s early injury meant Colin Brown stepped in to plug the gap, and the effort was there, but Doune & Dunblane took control early and never let it go.

There were bright spots, though - and Richie made sure to highlight them.
Jamie Aitken, coaxed out of retirement for the skipper’s final game, rolled back the years with a wicket and a fielding display that reminded everyone that class is permanent. Shrimal Siriwardena struck in his only over, showing Richie exactly what he’s been missing. But the standout was young Innes Brown, who bowled with accuracy, calmness, and maturity to keep the run rate under control when everyone else was struggling. His spell was the clear high point of the innings.

Despite these moments, Doune & Dunblane powered to 314 for 4, helped by a heavy tally of extras.

Chasing 315, Falkland actually started well. Geoff Roff top‑scored with 23 before falling to a remarkable moment: the youngest wicket‑taker in Doune & Dunblane history, 12‑year‑old George Ward. That brought in Richie for his final innings. He crashed his first ball to the fence - a perfect captain’s statement - but two balls later, the same 12‑year‑old spinner claimed him too. Not the ending he wanted, but one that will be remembered with a smile.

The innings followed a familiar pattern. Another record fell when Nicholas Denney was caught at deep cover by the youngest wicket‑taker for Daniel Hart. Jamie Aitken showed resistance with 15, and the day ended with a lovely moment as Jamie and his wife Heather Aitken shared the final wicket stand together before Jamie was bowled.

Falkland finished on 102 all out, but the score wasn’t the story.

Richie’s final message as captain was simple:
It’s been a hard season, but the spirit is there. Improve the fielding, tighten the bowling discipline, and work on batting confidence - and the wins will come. The talent is in the squad; the challenge now is turning effort into consistency.

Richie - on behalf of everyone at Falkland CC, thank you.

You’ve led the Threes with patience, humour, and genuine care. You’ve supported young players, steadied the team through tough days, and kept spirits high even when results didn’t go our way. Your final game didn’t deliver the fairytale, but it showed exactly what you’ve built: a team that fights, laughs, learns, and sticks together.

You leave the Threes in a better place than you found them - and that’s the mark of a great captain.

All the best for the move south. You’ll always be part of Falkland.
