Falkland 3 travelled to East Drive on Saturday and, despite another battling performance, slipped to defeat as Largo chased down 68 for the loss of just one wicket. It was a day full of effort, spirit, and a few memorable moments - but ultimately one where the Threes were left wishing for just a few more runs on the board.

Winning the toss, skipper Richie Barclay stuck to the mantra of “earn the right to field” and chose to bat first. The plan lasted one ball. The returning Geoff Roff was extremely unlucky, a pad‑onto‑stumps dismissal in the first over that brought the captain to the crease far earlier than intended. Richie’s stay was only slightly longer - and while he’d love to claim he got a jaffer, he admitted afterwards that he simply missed a straight one.

At 1-2, Falkland needed calm heads, and Martin Kirkbride and Shrimal Siriwardena provided exactly that. They dug in, saw off Largo’s best bowlers, and took the innings all the way to the 18th over. It wasn’t fast - Falkland were going at just under a run an over - but it was gritty, fingernail‑chewing stuff for the spectators who had begun to gather.

Martin eventually fell, opening the door for Nick Denney to bring some fireworks. Sadly, he lasted only one ball. Iona Lennie looked composed before a leading edge carried to her nemesis - Lynx tormentor Eilidh Macleod - who held the catch. Debutant Steven Mackay came and went, giving Ruaridh Green a chance to shine, only for him to be bowled by the only genuine jaffer of the day.

Skye Green and Laura Lennie supported Shrimal for a while, but Largo’s Lynx‑powered attack continued to chip away. At 37-9, Falkland were in danger of being bowled out for fewer runs than overs faced.

Enter Andrew Armstrong.

Andrew changed the mood instantly, teeing off with intent and forcing Largo to spread the field as the scoreboard finally began to tick. His 20 from 25 balls was the innings that gave Falkland something to bowl at, and the 10th‑wicket partnership quietened the home side noticeably. The innings closed on 68, with Shrimal carrying his bat for a superb, stoic 26 from 115 balls - an effort of real concentration and commitment.

Defending a small total, Falkland started brilliantly. Andrew Armstrong bowled tightly and found two edges, one of which was taken well by Nick behind the stumps. Skye Green kept things economical at the other end, and for a few overs there was genuine optimism among the Falkland faithful.

Bowling changes brought Iona Lennie and skipper Barclay into the attack, but the breakthrough wouldn’t come. Young Roo was handed the ball and bowled well enough to earn his first senior wicket - only for Geoff to deny him by emulating Ben Stokes and celebrating too early, dropping the catch in the process.

From there, the lack of runs told. Largo eased to 69 for 1, sealing a comfortable win.

Despite the result, the Threes showed plenty of fight. A few more runs and it would have been a very different game. It’s been a challenging season, but the group keeps plugging away, playing with great spirit and enjoying their cricket. Thanks to Largo for hosting in the same spirit - and onto next week, still chasing that elusive win.
