Falkland 3s struggled to get going again with the bat and were unable to defend a below‑par total in the rain against Kinloch 3s at Harris Academy Recreation Ground in Dundee.

Put in to bat first after stand‑in skipper Conor MacHugh lost the toss, openers Shrimal Siriwardena and Robbie Gilmour attempted to set a platform. That hope was short‑lived as Robbie gloved a rising delivery through to the keeper in the fourth over. Scoring proved difficult against an accurate Kinloch attack, and Reuben Forbes was clean bowled two overs later to leave Falkland 8–2 after seven overs.

Debutant David Hill showed real promise and looks a good addition to the side, but a push for a second run saw his debut end early as a strong throw from deep fine leg caught him short. Wickets continued to fall with no partnerships able to develop, and Shrimal’s long, stubborn “great wall” innings — as one Kinloch fielder described it — finally came to an end.

As has been the case many times this season, the juniors stepped up to bring some stability and respectability to the innings. Owen Cutler top‑scored with 15, and Struan Keddie fought hard for his 5, taking Falkland to 59–7. The final three wickets fell for just one run, leaving Struan stranded as partners fell one after another.

The final batter was another debutant — 10‑year‑old Roo Green, dwarfed by the Kinloch team, who all gathered around to welcome him to the crease. He unfortunately swiped at his first delivery and was caught, prompting a chorus of playful boos from the Kinloch players.

Chasing a low total — and racing the rain, which threatened to end the game early — Kinloch came out swinging. Owen Cutler was asked to open the bowling to bring control and threat, and he delivered superbly, taking two wickets in his first over and finishing with excellent figures of 3–23 from 5 overs as Kinloch batters swung and missed at his variations.

The worsening rain meant pace bowling was impossible on the slick astro surface without risking player safety. Reuben Forbes came on to try to replicate Owen’s impact and almost produced a top catch from Roo, who couldn’t quite cling on. Ultimately, Kinloch chased the runs down in 11 overs thanks to a brutal 36 from A. Salam, leaving the 3s still searching for their first win of the season.

Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives: the junior players showed great development, Owen delivered a standout spell, and the team were able to give two new players their debut — a promising sign for the future.
