Falkland 3 made the trip to The Grazings on Saturday for their first visit to Doune & Dunblane, arriving to a ground that had taken on plenty of end‑week rain and required an early inspection before play was confirmed. Showers drifted through the afternoon but never heavy enough to force the players off, and the match went ahead on a surface that demanded patience and discipline.

Put in to bat, Falkland started steadily through Shrimal Siriwardena and Richie Barclay, who worked hard to build a base despite sharp ground fielding that restricted scoring heavily. After 15 overs the 3s had reached just 31, and when Shrimal was bowled soon after, the innings needed a spark. Young Innes Brown joined Richie, but a mix‑up in the next over saw Richie adjudged run out pushing for a second run, leaving Falkland 35 for 2. Skipper Gary Lennie arrived and struck two crisp boundaries before being bowled, and the familiar pattern of batters getting in but not staying in began to reappear.

The next two overs brought further setbacks as Innes and Arran Barclay fell, and at drinks Falkland were 55 for 5 — “branded like Colin McRae’s rally car,” as the skipper put it. Martin Kirkbride and Nicholas Denney then set about rebuilding with sensible cricket, but Doune & Dunblane’s fielding remained tight and scoring opportunities were scarce. Mackinley’s return brought two quick wickets, removing Martin and Conor MacHugh, and the innings again looked fragile.

Through the chaos, Nick Denney remained composed, playing the senior role superbly. He and Skye Green added 19 valuable runs before Skye was caught, and Nick then combined with Owen Forbes in a partnership of 27 that finally gave Falkland some momentum. Owen and Iona Lennie added a few more before Owen was caught, giving Mackinley his fifth wicket and closing the innings at 112 all out — a total the team knew was well short of par.

The pre‑innings huddle focused on tight bowling and sharp fielding, and the 3s began well. Gary Lennie and Conor MacHugh built pressure early, and in the fifth over B Hart hit his own wicket to give Falkland their first breakthrough. Gary struck again in the ninth, nipping one back to remove Herbst, and at 28 for 2 the visitors were right in the contest.

But Gallagher remained, and as he settled the game began to tilt. Bowling changes brought Iona Lennie and Skye Green into the attack, but a loose over released the pressure. Skye then injured her hand saving a certain six and had to be replaced mid‑over by Innes Brown, who bowled excellently. Richie Barclay’s spin brought control and chances, but Doune & Dunblane continued to move steadily towards the target, reaching 80 for 2 by the 15‑over mark.

With only four runs needed at what would have been drinks, play continued. Gary returned and bowled Gallagher first ball of the over, sparking the faintest flicker of hope, but the hosts completed the chase in the next over, finishing on 113 for 3 in 22 overs.

It was a frustrating day where Falkland didn’t bat, bowl or field well enough as a unit, and the difference in fielding standards between the sides proved decisive. But there were positives: Nick Denney’s excellent 28, his highest score for the 3s; Gary Lennie’s strong spell of 3 for 22; and the commitment shown by Skye, Richie, Innes and Gary in the field, throwing themselves into the contest and willing to wear badges for the team.

There is plenty to work on, but the message is clear: it’s easier to save 20 runs than score them, and improving the fielding will be key to securing that first win of the season.
