Another tough afternoon for the 3rd XI, as dropped chances and a stubborn Clackmannanshire batting effort proved decisive in a 125‑run defeat at The Arns. But beneath the scoreline there were important positives — especially for the club’s growing youth core.

With overcast conditions overhead, skipper Gary Lennie won the toss and chose to bowl. With regular opener Rory Mackenzie playing up in the 2s, the new ball fell to the captain himself. The away‑swing was dramatic — so dramatic he had to start his run‑up somewhere near Malcolm Marshall’s tramlines — and Clacks opener Tony Bennett was happy to cut anything with width, ticking the scoreboard over early.

Robbie Gilmour shared the new ball from the railway end, finding variable bounce but not the breakthrough. Rain briefly interrupted things, but the introduction of spin changed the tone of the innings.

Emma Halliwell (3‑28) and Owen Cutler (1‑27) bowled superbly in tandem, tying down the batters and finally breaking through — Owen’s wicket coming courtesy of a sharp debut catch behind the stumps from 13‑year‑old keeper Struan Keddie, who impressed throughout.

But the story of the innings was the one that got away. During those 16 overs, three chances went down — a caught‑and‑bowled for Emma, one at mid‑wicket for Shrimal, and one at mid‑on for Andrew — all off the bat of Scotland Over‑60s opener A. Bennett, who made Falkland pay with a composed, unbeaten 101. He was the difference-maker.

Richie Barclay took up the spin role later on, supported by Owen Forbes, Andrew and Mo with seam. Richie claimed a wicket thanks to a tidy catch from Robbie — father showing son how it’s done — and Clacks closed on 197/5, a total Falkland felt was within reach.

Unfortunately, the chase never settled.
A combination of excellent bowling and perhaps a touch too much respect saw Arran Barclay fall for a four‑ball duck, followed quickly by Robbie. Emma steadied things briefly with 7 from 17, but wickets continued to fall: Owen (1), Shrimal (6), and suddenly Falkland were 20‑5, the innings collapsing like a Jenga tower losing its middle block.

There were bright spots.
Mohammad Hussain (23)* played with maturity beyond his years, rebuilding patiently and showing real promise. Andrew Gilmour (7) added support, and cameos from Richie, Gary and Struan tried to keep things moving, but partners ran out and Falkland were bowled out for 72 in 26.5 overs.

Despite the result, the day carried real value.

Another debut — and a highly impressive one — for Struan Keddie, who kept with composure, took his first catch, and nearly claimed a stumping too.

That makes nine current Falcons who have played 3s cricket this season, with more juniors waiting in the wings. These experiences — the tough days, the long spells, the pressure moments — are exactly what will turn them into better cricketers.

The hunt for that first win continues next week against Glenrothes, and the belief remains strong.
