A Tough Night in the Trophy

Cameron Nellies

Early wickets stall Falkland’s innings before Kinloch’s top order finishes the job quickly.

Falkland 2 bowed out of the SPCU Trophy on Tuesday night as Kinloch produced a dominant chase at Scroggie Park, winning by ten wickets with more than half their overs unused. Falkland battled hard with the bat to reach 97 for 7, but Kinloch’s top order proved far too strong, finishing the game inside nine overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Falkland struggled to find momentum against a disciplined Kinloch attack. Devon May started positively for his 16, and Charlie Burton followed with a useful 19, but regular wickets prevented any sustained partnerships. Kinloch’s bowlers kept things tight throughout, with I Amin and S Ahmed combining for five wickets and conceding just 32 runs from their eight overs.

The middle order found it difficult to break free, though Scott Meikle played the innings of the night for Falkland - a composed, important 22 not out, holding things together as the innings threatened to stall. Robbie Gilmour added a handy unbeaten 9 at the end, pushing Falkland to 97 for 7, a total that at least gave the bowlers something to work with.

Kinloch’s reply, however, was ruthless. H Hussain was in destructive form, smashing 59 from 28 balls with five fours and five sixes. He was supported by S Khan, who played the perfect foil with a steady 25 from 22. The pair put on 99 without loss, chasing the target in just 8.3 overs.

Falkland tried six bowlers in search of a breakthrough, but Kinloch’s intent was clear from ball one and never relented. Even good deliveries were met with powerful hitting, and the visitors’ control of the chase left little room for Falkland to wrestle back momentum.

It was a tough night for the 2s, who fought well with the bat but simply came up against a top order in full flow. The group will now turn attention back to league action, looking to take positives from Meikle’s innings and the early contributions at the top.
