Falkland 2 travelled to East Drive on Saturday and, despite a determined batting effort, fell to defeat as Largo posted a commanding 310 for 8 before restricting the visitors to 207 for 8 in reply. It was a day where the 2s showed plenty of fight with the bat, but the size of the chase always loomed large.
Largo chose to bat first and built steadily through their top order. Warrender and Cusick put on a strong opening stand, both passing 40, before Rory Mackenzie struck twice in quick succession to remove Coates and Gillin. At 153-3, Falkland had a foothold - but Largo accelerated brutally from there.
Das added 34, Kriskinans smashed 36 from 22, and Udayan’s explosive 35 from 13 balls - including four sixes - pushed the total out of reach. With 50 extras also added to the tally, Largo closed on 310 for 8 from 45 overs. Mackenzie was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 41, while Ryan Hepburn and Reuben Forbes each claimed two wickets.
Chasing a huge target, Falkland needed a strong start but lost Callum May early. Craig Trewartha and Reuben Forbes dug in, but the innings only truly sparked when Craig Hepburn arrived. His positive 30 from 39 balls gave Falkland momentum, and when he fell at 65-4, the chase looked in danger of stalling.
Instead, the middle order rallied superbly. Ryan Hepburn played the innings of the day - a composed, well‑paced 42 from 58 balls - keeping Falkland competitive and refusing to let the run rate overwhelm the chase. He was supported by Ryan Jennings, who struck a brisk 14, and Gary Lennie, who battled hard for 4.
The late surge came from Rory Mackenzie, who capped a strong all‑round performance with a fluent 48 not out from 51 balls, including five fours and two sixes. He and Struan Keddie (19 not out) put on an excellent partnership to take Falkland past 200 and ensure the innings finished with real positivity.
Falkland closed on 207 for 8, a spirited reply that showed character and depth - but the size of Largo’s first‑innings total meant the game had slipped away long before the final overs.
There was plenty to admire in the fight shown with the bat, and several players produced performances to build on. But the 2s will know that conceding 300 makes life difficult against any opposition. The effort was there - now it’s about tightening the bowling and reducing the extras to turn competitive passages into competitive results.
