Falkland 2 fell to defeat at Scroggie Park on Saturday as Tay Lions chased down 119 with plenty of overs to spare, ending a frustrating afternoon where the 2s never quite got going with the bat and couldn’t build enough pressure in defence.
Asked to bat first, Falkland were on the back foot almost immediately. Devon May fell early, and although Craig Trewartha and Reuben Forbes rebuilt steadily, wickets continued to fall in clusters. Reuben played the standout innings of the top order - a composed 30 from 34 balls - but his dismissal at 60-4 opened the door for Tay Lions to tighten their grip.
The middle order struggled to generate momentum. Craig Hepburn added 12, Angus Forbes chipped in with 8, and Gary Lennie produced the most fluent knock of the innings with 24 from 31, including the only six of Falkland’s effort. But with ten wickets falling inside 27 overs, the innings never stabilised long enough to push towards a competitive total.
The saving grace was the extras column: 29 wides, no‑balls and byes dragged Falkland up to 119 all out, a total that felt well short of par on a good surface.
Defending a small score, Falkland needed early breakthroughs - and they got one when Mohammad Hussain trapped Ravihansa lbw. But from there, Tay Lions took control through T Wadugee, whose authoritative 61 from 59 balls effectively decided the match. He struck 11 boundaries and punished anything even slightly off line.
Gary Lennie bowled with heart and picked up two wickets, removing Perera and Boruppa, but the Lions always stayed ahead of the rate. K Punsara’s rapid 21 from 11 balls finished the chase with a flourish, taking the visitors to 120 for 4 in 18.5 overs.
For Falkland, this was a day where the batting never quite clicked and the bowlers were left with too little to defend. The effort was there, but the Lions were simply allowed to dictate the game’s tempo from too early a stage.
The 2s will regroup and look to bounce back next week - the foundations are there, but they’ll know they need more runs on the board to turn effort into results.
