A Fighting Performance from the 2s

Cameron Nellies

Top‑order runs and Ryan’s excellent spell highlight a competitive showing at Scroggie Park.

Falkland 2 returned to Scroggie Park on Saturday and produced a competitive performance against Gordonians, but ultimately fell just short as the visitors chased down 162 with four wickets in hand. It was a match where Falkland were in the contest for long spells, but a combination of middle‑order wickets and a costly number of extras with the ball proved decisive.

Batting first after winning the toss, Falkland made a steady start through Callum May and Craig Trewartha, who put on a composed opening partnership. Callum anchored the innings with a patient 38 from 89 balls, while Craig played positively for his 35 from 47, striking five fours and a six. Their stand took Falkland to 61–1 and laid a solid platform.

Ryan Hepburn continued the momentum with a fluent 35 from 43, and Devon May added a brisk 16 from 11, but once the top four were dismissed the innings lost stability. Gordonians’ A Zar proved the difference, taking a superb 6 for 34, running through the middle and lower order. Wickets fell in clusters, and despite George Gallagher, Connor Langlands and the Cutler brothers battling for runs, Falkland were bowled out for 162 in 41.1 overs.

With the ball, Falkland started brightly. Owen Cutler struck early, removing Patel, and Alan Hamilton followed up with a wicket of Perera to leave Gordonians 10–2. The visitors rebuilt through Kirodian and Pandit, but Falkland kept the pressure on, particularly through Ryan Hepburn, who bowled an excellent spell of 9 overs, 3 for 36, removing both set batters and giving Falkland a real chance.

At 118–6, the game was finely balanced - but Gordonians’ lower order seized control. M Ahmadzai played the decisive innings, hitting a rapid 33 from 21 balls, including two sixes, to swing the match back their way. Combined with a large tally of 42 extras, Gordonians were able to reach the target in 35.4 overs, finishing on 163–6.

Despite the defeat, there were positives: strong top‑order contributions, Ryan’s excellent spell, and a bowling unit that kept fighting throughout. The 2s were competitive for long stretches and will feel they weren’t far away from turning this one into a win.
