Uncovered Pitch, Unforgiving Afternoon

Cameron Nellies

Batting proves difficult at The Priory as the 2s fall short in challenging conditions.

Falkland 2 travelled to Rossie Priory on Saturday and found themselves facing a pitch that had clearly suffered from the week’s weather, with no covers available and a surface that made run‑scoring a real challenge. It quickly became obvious that this would be a day where survival, patience and a bit of luck were going to matter more than stroke‑play, and unfortunately Falkland never quite managed to find the partnerships needed to post a competitive total.

Batting first, the 2s struggled to get going. Craig Trewartha and George Cutler both fell early, and although Stuart Campbell battled hard for a determined 19, the pitch offered little reward for positive intent. Ryan Hepburn, Rory Mackenzie and Owen Cutler all tried to dig in, but Rossie’s bowlers used the conditions well, hitting the right areas and letting the surface do the work. Emma Halliwell played the most assured innings of the day, finishing unbeaten on 14 and showing the value of staying calm when the ball was misbehaving, but with four wickets falling for just five runs in the middle overs, Falkland’s innings never recovered. Extras pushed the total up, but 73 all out in 21.5 overs reflected just how tough batting had been.

Defending such a small score was always going to be difficult, and Rossie Priory approached the chase with freedom. Alan Hamilton struck early to remove Zachariah, but from there the hosts took control. Awais played confidently for his 46 not out, punishing anything even slightly off‑line, and Khan’s brisk 9 ensured the chase was completed quickly. Falkland’s bowlers stuck to their task, but with so few runs to play with, chances were limited. Rossie reached 74 for 1 in 11.5 overs to seal a comfortable win.

It was one of those days where conditions dictated the match, and Falkland simply couldn’t find a foothold with the bat. The effort was there, and Emma’s innings in particular showed the right approach, but on a tricky surface with no covers to protect it, the 2s were always fighting uphill. The challenge now is to regroup, reset, and look ahead to friendlier conditions and better opportunities in the coming weeks.
