Falkland 2 returned to Scroggie on Saturday for what always promised to be a difficult assignment, made even tougher by a week of unavailability and late reshuffles caused by changes to the 1st XI. What followed, though, was a performance full of heart, effort and admirable resilience from a side packed with youngsters who refused to let the situation overwhelm them.
Bowling first, Falkland made an excellent start. Reuben Forbes struck, removing Riley, and Mohammad Hussain produced a superb spell to take two wickets, including Brownlow and Armstrong in quick succession. With Doo'cot 3 down, the 2s were right in the contest. Perth rebuilt through Murray and Ali, but Falkland kept chipping away, with Ryan Hepburn bowling with real control to claim 3 for 26 and Alan Hamilton matching him with 3 for 22 in a strong middle‑overs spell. The fielding unit, featuring several teenagers, stuck to their task admirably despite the pressure, and although extras pushed the visitors up to 173, the bowlers deserved huge credit for dragging the innings back repeatedly.
Chasing 174 was always going to be a challenge for such a young side, but again the 2s showed real fight. Reuben Forbes and Rory Mackenzie tried to settle things early before Ryan Hepburn and Owen Cutler formed a partnership that kept Falkland in the hunt for the victory. Hepburn made a composed 29, and Owen Cutler played with maturity beyond his years, top‑scoring with an excellent 31, while Struan Keddie added a valuable 10 and showed good intent throughout his stay.
Late wickets then fell and the 2s were bowled out for 117.
Given the circumstances — a heavily depleted squad, multiple late changes, and a strong visiting side — the 2s did exceptionally well to stay competitive for so long. The youngsters in particular were outstanding: committed in the field, disciplined with the ball, and brave with the bat.
It wasn’t the result the team wanted, but it was absolutely a performance to be proud of, and one that showed the depth of talent coming through the club.
