Falkland 2s suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, falling to Kinloch by three wickets in a match where injuries, missed chances and a lack of partnerships proved decisive.
Having won the toss and batted first, Falkland lost an early wicket before an excellent 71‑run partnership between Kyle Lottering (36) and Charlie Burton (30 retired hurt) steadied the innings. The pair batted with real control, navigating a disciplined Kinloch attack and setting a strong platform. However, a mix‑up led to Lottering’s run‑out, and moments later Burton was forced to retire with a hamstring injury — a double setback that halted all momentum.
From there, Falkland struggled to rebuild. Stuart Campbell (29) contributed through the middle overs, but regular wickets prevented any acceleration. It was Craig Hepburn (38 off 30)* who provided the late impetus, striking cleanly at the death to lift Falkland to 200/7 from 45 overs — a total the captain felt was below par on a good Scroggie surface.
Kinloch began their chase aggressively, but Falkland kept themselves in the contest by taking wickets at steady intervals. Greg Chambers (2‑46) struck twice, Homayon Gajarwal (2‑29) bowled tightly, and Ryan Hepburn (2‑38) picked up key middle‑order wickets. At 113‑5, the game was finely balanced.
However, a 65‑run partnership for the sixth wicket swung the match decisively towards the visitors. A few decisions didn’t fall Falkland’s way, and with three players carrying injuries, the 2s couldn’t wrestle back control. Kinloch eventually reached 201/7 in 42.3 overs, sealing the win with three wickets in hand.
A tough day at the office — injuries, misfortune and missed opportunities all playing their part — but still positives in the early partnership, Craig’s late hitting, and the effort shown with the ball.
