Carlton batted first on a breezy day with our artificial displaying its usual inconsistencies. The game was played over 36 overs bowled in blocks of 6 from one end and then 6 from the other. This split the covid breaks and worked well with so many youngsters on both teams.

Carlton batted steadily as captain Greg Chambers rotated his (mostly) young bowlers in pairs in the 6 over blocks. Emma took the first wicket in the 7th over and then Mo Assad took the 1st of his four as two of the opposition’s experienced players were building a partnership. Runs then came steadily including a number of extras which ended up as the top scorer.

Wickets also fell at regular intervals but the technical skill of the Carlton youngsters was clear for all to see with most loose balls being punished. Ryan Jennings bowled with good control off a short run but was able to get some bounce. One particularly well directed bumper led to a mis-timed pull shot that was brilliantly caught at backward square by Ben Morris – the 1st of two catches he took in that position.

Ben’s day was going to get better. He opened the batting with George and was at the other end as Falkland got off to a shaky start. 155 seemed a long way off at 9 for 3, however a partner for Ben came in the unlikely form of Greg and the pair put on nearly 90 for the 4th wicket. Ben’s innings contained a selection of fine shots with7 fours and 2 sixes. Once Greg was out trapped lbw for 36 and Emma followed fairly soon after, it was Ryan Jennings who joined Ben to see Falkland home, finishing the game with his 2nd six.
