The 1st XI closed out their season at Forthill on Saturday with a dramatic, nerve‑shredding one‑wicket win - a result that felt both exhilarating in the moment and symbolic of a campaign that so often teetered between promise and frustration. It was also an emotional afternoon as Falkland said farewell to Kyle Lottering and Jarryd Lookwhy, who now head home to South Africa after making much appreciated contributions on and off the field throughout the summer.

Forfarshire chose to bat first and posted 214, a total built on several starts rather than one defining innings. Falkland’s bowlers shared the workload well: Tass Hussain (3 for 34) and Taha Khan (2 for 43) led the way, while Lyle Robertson and Daniel Styer chipped in with important breakthroughs.

The chase, however, was the story of the day - and in many ways, the story of the season.

Early wickets left Falkland 48-3, and when Kyle Lottering (10) and Jarryd Lookwhy (8) fell in their final appearances for the club, the innings threatened to drift. But Asifulla Khan produced one of the knocks of the year: a superb, composed 83 from 88 balls, full of authority and responsibility. He was supported brilliantly by Jack Henderson, whose 37 from 55 helped rebuild the innings and drag Falkland back into contention.

Yet, true to the pattern of 2026, just when Falkland looked in control, they let the door swing open. From 180-6, wickets tumbled - Asif, Styer, and Hussain all fell in quick succession - leaving the 1s suddenly nine down and staring at another game slipping away.

This season has been full of moments where Falkland were ahead, on top, cruising… only to let the opposition back in. It has been the difference between a campaign that could have been excellent and one that ultimately settled somewhere in the middle.

But on this final day, the ending was different.

George Cutler and Taha Khan held their nerve, nudging, blocking, and scampering their way to the target. With three balls to spare, George clipped the winning runs, sealing a one‑wicket victory and sparking a wave of relief more than celebration.

It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t comfortable. But it was a win - and a fittingly chaotic finale to a season that never quite found its rhythm.

The 1s showed flashes of being a top‑four side - big wins, strong positions, dominant spells - but too often let games slip that were well within their grasp. Saturday’s finale was nearly another chapter in that story, but instead ended with a rare close‑game victory.

Middle of the road in the table, but full of moments that suggest more is possible.

The challenge now is to turn those moments into consistency next year.
