Falkland came close to a statement win at Scroggie Park on Saturday, pushing Watsonians deep into the final overs before falling short by 29 runs. The visitors posted 293 for 8, but that total looked far from certain at the halfway stage - Falkland had them 101 for 5 and fully under pressure - before a match‑defining counterattack turned the game.

Watsonians chose to bat first and were made to work hard early. Taha Khan struck the first blow, removing Asif, and Falkland’s discipline with the ball kept scoring tight. Daniel Styer then produced an excellent spell, dismissing Kirkwood and Du Randt to leave Watsonians 78–3. When Henderson removed Wylie’s partner Pillinger and Styer claimed Boothman soon after, Falkland had the visitors 101–5 and the momentum firmly in their favour.

What followed was the turning point of the match.

Watsonians rebuilt through Wylie, whose patient 73 from 104 balls held the innings together, but it was T Kuhn who changed everything. His explosive 100 from 69 balls, featuring six fours and seven sixes, flipped the game on its head. Falkland continued to fight - Meikle removed Wylie and Kuhn in an interesting late spell - but the damage was done. Late hitting from Martin and Hidderley pushed Watsonians to 293 for 8, a total that felt well above par given how well Falkland had bowled early.

Styer finished with 3 for 46, Meikle took 2 for 25, and Khan bowled with excellent control for 1 for 45.

Chasing a big target, Falkland needed partnerships - and they delivered. Steven Meikle and Jack Henderson set a solid platform, adding 40 for the first wicket before Meikle fell for 19. Henderson continued fluently, striking eight fours and a six in his 46 from 67 balls, taking Falkland to 101-3 and mirroring Watsonians’ early position.

After Sri and Stuart Campbell departed, the innings belonged to Jarryd Lookwhy.

Jarryd produced a magnificent, perfectly paced 100 not out from 89 balls, with eight fours and three sixes. He absorbed pressure, punished anything loose, and kept Falkland in the hunt throughout the middle overs. Support came from Devon May (11 from 7) and Tassawar Hussain, whose punchy 30 from 23 balls reignited the chase and brought the required rate back within reach.

But Watsonians struck at key moments, removing Tassawar at 201–7 and Styer at 247–8. With overs running out, Jarryd continued to fight, but the target proved just beyond reach. Falkland closed on 264 for 9, a brave and impressive effort that reflected the quality of the contest.

Watsonians’ recovery from 101–5 ultimately proved decisive. Falkland had earned the right to control the game but couldn’t contain the momentum once Kuhn began to clear the ropes, and the visitors’ total ended up far higher than the position deserved. It was a reminder of how quickly matches swing at this level when discipline slips, even briefly.

The chase had bright moments - most notably Lookwhy’s outstanding century - but Falkland were always fighting the scoreboard. Partnerships came and went, and although the innings never folded, it never truly threatened Watsonians either. The final total of 264/9 was respectable, but the match will be remembered more for the opportunity missed earlier in the day than for the late resistance.
