Falkland will look back on Saturday’s defeat to Carlton as a major missed opportunity. After reducing the visitors to 34 for 5 in the first hour, the 1st XI were in complete control at Scroggie Park - but a determined recovery from Carlton and the absence of a match‑shaping partnership with the bat saw the game slip away, ending in a 37‑run loss.

Carlton, having chosen to bat, were rocked early by Falkland’s best bowling start of the season. Adnan Mufti struck twice in quick succession, removing Gill and McBride, before Logan Briggs and Taha Khan tightened the screw. Briggs bowled Guy for 10, Khan removed Davidson, and Mufti claimed Da Costa to leave Carlton reeling at 34-5.

From that position, Falkland were favourites - but Carlton rebuilt superbly through A Pillai, who played a crucial, stubborn 57 from 91 balls, and J Stronach, who added 21. Their partnership dragged Carlton back into the contest, and late contributions from Beattie (28) and Regan (11*) pushed the total to 169 all out. Falkland’s bowlers were excellent throughout - Khan’s 2 for 17 from 9, Mufti’s 3 for 19, and Briggs’ 2 for 27 all deserved more reward - but the one partnership they couldn’t break proved decisive.

Chasing 170, Falkland needed one solid stand of their own. Instead, early wickets set the tone. Meikle, Henderson and Muramalla all fell quickly, leaving the hosts 21-3 and under pressure. Lyle Robertson and Jarryd Lookwhy rebuilt with patience, adding 36 and 22 respectively, but neither could go on to play the defining innings the situation demanded.

The middle order struggled to shift the momentum. Mufti fell first ball, May soon after, and when Robertson departed at 69–6, the chase was in deep trouble. Tassawar Hussain fought hard for 25 from 43, and Logan Briggs added 16, but wickets continued to fall at key moments. Falkland were bowled out for 132, still more than 30 short of a target that had once looked well within reach.

It was a frustrating afternoon: the bowlers delivered a superb first half, but Carlton’s recovery and Falkland’s inability to produce one telling partnership with the bat proved the difference. The 1s will know this was a game that could - and perhaps should - have gone their way.
