Meikle on the Mic as Rain Disrupts Falkland’s Rhythm

Cameron Nellies

A stop‑start innings, a spirited defence, and a performance in the commentary box worthy of Test Match Special.

A rain‑broken afternoon at Scroggie Park ended in a seven‑wicket defeat for Falkland, as Heriot’s chased down 123 in a match where the weather, interruptions, and a few moments of unplanned comedy all played their part.

Winning the toss and batting first, Falkland were in trouble early, slipping to 6 for 3 as Heriot’s seamers made full use of the damp conditions. Steven Meikle (30 off 34) counter‑attacked with five boundaries, dragging the innings back into shape before falling at 57‑6.

Once dismissed, Steven seamlessly transitioned into full Test Match Special mode — delivering such detailed, enthusiastic analysis that Jonathan Agnew would have been looking over his shoulder.

The backbone of the innings came from Jarryd Lookwhy (39 off 57), who rebuilt patiently despite the constant rain breaks. His innings ended in slightly more controversial fashion — a run taken that was, shall we say, questionable at best, leaving him short of his ground and the FrogBox capturing every angle of his disbelief.

Homayon Gajarwal (14) and Adnan Mufti (10) had previously added resistance, but regular wickets meant Falkland never escaped the early damage, finishing 123 all out in 29.2 overs.

The rain stoppages brought their own entertainment. As one heavy shower swept across Scroggie, Jarryd and Kyle were dispatched to rescue the FrogBox — a mission executed with unmistakable Chuckle Brothers energy. “To me, to you” echoed across the outfield as the device was zoomed in and out more ferociously than Jarryd's bowling arm at some points last season. Groundsman Dave Macintosh also received a brand new song, with the lyrics sounding something like "Davey Davey Mac, Davey Mac, Davey Davey Mac". Fair to say the punters watching at home enjoyed this.

Defending a small total, Falkland needed early breakthroughs. Taha Khan (2‑53) obliged twice, removing Brown and Maritz, while Homayon (1‑26) added another. But Heriot’s controlled the chase through P Ross (65 off 55), whose clean hitting ensured the required rate never rose. The visitors reached 129/3 in 18.2 overs, sealing a comfortable win.

A frustrating day with bat and ball, but one brightened by humour, resilience, and Meikle’s unexpected audition for the BBC commentary team. On to Tuesday night, where the 1s take on social media darlings and bitter rivals Freuchie in the CS T20 Cup.
