Falkland v Wolviston at Wolviston on Sunday June 24 in the National Village Cup
Falkland 206 all out
(B Strachan 79, G Doig 34, C Hepburn 21, L Chell 4 for 49)
Wolviston 160 all out
(S Nicholson 34, A Fish 33, R Hepburn 3 for 42)
Falkland won by 46 runs
On as hot a day as one is likely to encounter in the Great Britain, Falkland advanced to the last 16 of the Village Cup with an assured performance. Batting first they put put on 206 in spite of being 22 for 3 at one point. However a fine stand of 73 between Grant Doig and Ben Strachan turned things round, and Ben went on to score 79 with a few late runs from Craig Hepburn helping the total over the 200 mark.
As significant as anything in the result of the game were the 31 extras conceded by the Englishmen, 26 of them were wides. Not only is that a free gift of 26 runs, but it is also an extra four and a bit overs. Fortunately Falkland conceded only 8 wides (one could still say that that was too many) and in general the bowling was accurate with a great deal of credit to be given to two normally unsung heroes of the team - Steven Meikle and Geordie Gallagher - who bowled the vital overs in the middle of the innings and "kept it tight", never allowing the Wolviston batsmen to get on top. The fielding was generally good to restrict Wolviston to 160, with Adam Ferguson taking three catches behind the stumps.
It was a lovely day out in the sun, (although wise spectators stayed in the shade) and the Englishmen were courteous and gentlemanly in their defeat. We wish them well for the rest of their season.
Next Round is at Falkland on July 8. A large crowd is expected. In the meantime congratulations to our team! Lord's in September beckons.......
