Falkland Season Starts With a Win

Falkland beat ASI Gordonians by 97 runs

Falkland got their season off to a fine start with a good win over Gordonians at Scroggie on Saturday. It was the first ever game that the club played in the Strathmore Union North Eastern Championship, and it is to be hoped that this good form can continue.

In overcast conditions, Stuart Campbell decided to bat first and the start was steady rather than spectacular until a few wickets fell and Falkland's position looked precarious at 95 for 5, but Ben Strachan and Graeme Watson came together and put on 69 runs for the 6th wicket with Strachan scoring 81 including three 6's. A few lusty blows from Adam Ferguson at the end ensured that Falkland finished with a more than respectable score of 224 for 8 in the allotted 45 Overs, although as significant as anything else was the amount of Wides (30 in all) conceded by the Gordonians bowlers.

Gordonians started brightly, and as long as Saraswat was in, they had a chance but the ball kept low and six of their batsmen fell to lbw decisions thanks to the nagging accuracy of Ryan Hepburn and Ben Strachan. Starchan took 6 wickets and Hepburn 3. Gordonians' tail did not wag and Falkland did not concede as many wides as Gordonians did. The result was a comfortable win for the home side. It was a good launch to the season, and Falkland now travel to Meigle for their second game next Saturday.
