Two Tight Wins Secure Trophy

The experiment of having a Fife Cup Finals day (rather than playing the tournament on midweek evenings) proved to be an outstanding success on Sunday. The event was blessed with good weather and a large attendance at Scroggie Park. The day opened with Falkland beating Dunfermline in the semi-final, Dunfermline falling only four runs short of Falkland's 137 with a run out near the end possibly being the deciding factor after their two stalwarts Vasu and Yasir seemed to have put the Pars in a strong position. Brock Ditchmen's bowling figures of 3 for 17 were a deciding factor as well.

Then in the other semi-final Freuchie beat Dunnikier in a game marred by one unsavoury incident to set up a Falkland v Freuchie final. This game was always highly competitive but very sporting, and played in the proper spirit. Falkland's 88 did not really seem to be enough when Freuchie got off to a good start, being 20 for 0 at the end of the second over, but good bowling from Lyle Robertson, Logan Briggs, Brock Ditchmen and Alan Hamilton, backed up by some good fielding saw Falkland home by 20 runs in spite of 24 from David Stonebridge and 25 from Dale Cowan.

The Fife Cup was presented to captain Steven Meikle at the end by Charlie McPherson a veteran of the fine Blairgowrie and Perthshire teams of the 1950s and 1960s, and a regular attender at Falkland. It was a fine day's cricket.
